June Book Club: Edmund Unravels

Andrea Sanchez

It's finally time to introduce our very first book club selection: Edmund Unravels by Andrew Kolb.

This story is about an adventurous ball of yarn named Edmund. He is an explorer at heart, always seeking out new thrills. But what he comes to find is that while the world holds a lot of adventure, there's nothing quite like the love and comfort of home.

This book's beautiful and vibrant graphic illustrations are what initially grabbed me. Andrew Kolb is not only an author, but a graphic designer as well. His skill is well showcased in this book. Especially for a children's book, I love that many of the illustrations are made from simple shapes and colors. With a younger reader, we were able to discuss the shapes and colors we saw throughout the story.

When I shared this book with older readers (5 and 6 year olds) they were really taken with Edmund's fun adventure ("Yikes! There's a cat!") but understood the draw to be home as well. I shared this story with my students towards the end of our school year and used it to prompt their writing by asking them to share what they loved best about their families and what made them special.

I think this is the perfect book to start our summer. Summers are meant to be full of exploration and adventure - even if that is limited to our own neighborhoods. You can purchase your own copy of Edmund Unravels on Amazon (affiliate link) or check it out from your local library.

This month's Book Club pattern is inspired by Edmund's adventurous spirit. The Adventure Vest is an easy to wear sweater vest sized for children from 6 months to 12 years. The smaller sizes include instructions for a button closure on the right shoulder to make for easy dressing. All sizes are knit in the round from the bottom up and feature a textured stitch throughout the yoke.

For this pattern I used Weepaca by Big Bad Wool. Not only is there a wonderful collection of colors to choose from, but this yarn is amazingly soft. Like, the moment I started winding it, I actually exclaimed, "Wow!" It is a blend of 50% washable merino and 50% alpaca. For the Adventure Vest I used the color Blue Eyes, but think this would look lovely in Pink Noses for little girls or Linen for a more neutral color.

You can grab your PDF pattern here on Knittin' Little or you can queue it up and show it some love on Ravelry. Get ready to knit your own Adventure Vest because next week I will be sharing a video tutorial on the featured stitch from this pattern.

I'll be back next week with an extension activity for shape recognition/geometry!

I'd love to know if you get this book or have read it. Did you enjoy it? What adventures does your family have planned for this summer? If you are participating in this month's book club please share your photos on Instagram with #klbookclub.
